Postcard from Vieques: Fun at the Grocery Store

It should be no surprise, we suppose, that a supermarket that serves a small island community would try to anticipate all the diverse needs of its customers. And as some of you may recall from our past reports (for example here, here and here) the efforts of Superdescuentos Morales in Vieques are known to have been amusingly impressive. Sometimes, though, they seem to overlook the obvious. Case in point:

Me: "Tiene los panuelos de papel?"

Female clerk stocking shelves in the aisle filled with paper towels, paper napkins, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, etc., looking a bit puzzled: " Kleenex?"

Me: "Si, Kleenex"

Clerk: "hmm...no"

Visits to the Morales in downtown Isabel II, and to La Tienda Verde, and even to the new Cash & Carry all produced similar strike outs. Perhaps we would have found success at one of the Colmados, but we opted to cut our (gasoline) losses and head to the farmacia on Benitez Guzman. There we found our panuelos, and we also found out something new about Vieques: It is only Viequense children who ever need Kleenex.

Herewith, we proudly present a few more samples from the Superdescuentos Morales Theatre of the Absurd:

They really do cater to ALL Viequenses!

And with one of us employed as a costumer
in the film industry, we really appreciate their parking policy!

  1. I had to comment- we just got back from several stores and were baffled that we could not find Kleenex only to read your blog and find we were not alone! My husband went to the Farmacia and asked but they said they had none. Next time we'll look for Mickey!

  2. This was a first for us, as well. The place we stay has always provided them in the bathroom, but this year none. This ranks right up there with the gasoline scarcity!

  3. Dudes, it is what it is.. if you do not like it go back to Canada and try to get a sun tan on January... should try to help instead of providing negligent critisism

  4. Dear Anonymous II (boy, that must have been a really popular name with expectant parents one year):

We're afraid you've completely missed the point. We love Morales! If you bother to come back to read this, please have a look to the right of the page under tags, click on Vieques, and have a browse. You'll see that we even publish recipes for great meals using ingredients exclusively from Morales.

Our affection for the island is rooted in annual visits for over 17 years- like any good friend, we feel entitled to poke a little fun at her once in a while!
